Renewing your Liquor License

Liquor Licenses with the Western Cape Liquor Authority are automatically renewed every year upon receipt of payment of the License annual renewal fees to the Liquor Authority. This amount is usually R3 000 and should reflect in the Western Cape Liquor Authority's Bank Account on or before 31 December of each year.

In the instance that the Renewal Fee is not paid on or before 31 December, the license will be renewed upon payment of R4 500 before the end of January, R6 000 before the end of February and the last opportunity of paying R9 000 before end of March together with an Application for condonation.

In the instance of a Distribution Registration with the National Liquor Authority, the Renewal Fee depends on the quantity of liquor produced and must be paid on the day a year after the Registration was obtained.

You are supposed to receive a Renewal Notice any time from October every year, but even if not received, this amount needs to be paid.

Also remember - even if the license is in the process of being transferred from one person to another, the renewal fee still needs to be paid.

Your license will automatically be renewed upon receipt of payment, except in the following circumstances when you have to apply for renewal:

  • If you became disqualified in terms of Section 35 of the Western Cape Liquor Act;

  • If you have been declared unfit to be the holder of a Liquor License by the Liquor License Tribunal;

  • If you have been the subject of a report to the CEO of the Liquor Authority concerning failure to comply with license conditions, compliance notice or the provisions of the Act;

  • If you have been the subject of complained received by a Municipality.

In this instance, you will usually receive a notice to this effect during July of every year.

If you do not pay the renewal fees in time or as described above, your license will unfortunately lapse and you will have to apply for a new license.
